How Word Ladder works,
in short.

Read the start and the target.
Every ladder runs between two four-letter words: the start pinned at the top of the board and the target at the bottom. Your job is to turn one into the other through a chain of real words, one rung at a time.

Change exactly one letter.
Type a real four-letter word that changes exactly one letter of the word above it — COLD can become CORD, but not CORK, which changes two — then press Enter to add the rung. The green tile just marks the letter you changed; words may not repeat within a ladder.

Reach the target to win.
When the word you enter is the target, the climb is complete. Par is the fewest steps possible between the two words — match it for a perfect climb, or lean on a hint to fill in the next word along a shortest route.
